Tent rental in the Stockade and downtown Schenectady
The Stockade is the city's oldest neighborhood, with houses from the 1700s and 1800s packed close along narrow streets by the Mohawk River. That shapes the tent. Most Stockade yards fit a 10x20 or a 20x20, and plenty of parties end up on a driveway, patio or courtyard instead of lawn.
On pavement, go with a frame tent. It stands on its own aluminum frame and is held down with water barrels or concrete weights, so nothing gets driven through your patio. Pole tents need open lawn and room for stakes around the outside, which most downtown lots don't have.
Two things matter more in the Stockade than anywhere else in the county: where the delivery truck can park, and how the gear gets from the street to the yard. Measure any gate or side passage before you book. A narrow gate is fine as long as the tent company knows about it ahead of time.
Sidewalls earn their keep on a small lot. A solid wall on the neighbor's side gives a tight yard some privacy, and windowed walls on the other sides keep a cool late-spring evening comfortable without closing the party in.

Bigger party tents for the GE Realty Plot
The Realty Plot, next to Union College, was laid out for GE executives around the turn of the 20th century, and the lots show it: big houses, deep lawns, old trees. Here the question isn't whether a tent fits. It's where. A 20x40 for 70 or 80 seated guests usually fits on the lawn, and the trees decide where it goes.
Measure the open lawn, then look up. A tent needs clear sky above it, and low limbs over the peak are the most common reason a setup has to move. If you want the tent tucked near the trees for shade, say so up front so the installer can tell you what's realistic.
Glenville, Scotia and Rotterdam graduation party tents
Across the river in Glenville and the Village of Scotia, and west of the city in Rotterdam, the lots are suburban: mostly flat lawns, room for a 20x30 or 20x40, and a driveway the truck can use. With open grass, a pole tent is a good choice: it stakes into the lawn, has the classic peaked look, and just needs more room around its edges than a frame tent of the same size. This is graduation country. Scotia-Glenville and Mohonasen open houses, like the rest of the Capital Region, pile up on the last two or three weekends of June, and the popular tent sizes go first.
For a grad party where people come and go, you don't need a seat for everyone at once. Seat about half to two thirds of the guest list, leave the rest as standing room, and put the food under the tent. Our graduation party checklist covers everything else on the list.
What size tent for a party in Schenectady
Plan roughly 10 to 12 square feet per guest seated at round tables and 6 to 8 square feet per guest standing, then add room for a buffet, bar or DJ.
| Tent size | Seated at round tables | Standing or cocktail |
|---|---|---|
| 10x20 | about 16 to 20 | about 25 to 33 |
| 20x20 | about 32 to 40 | about 50 to 65 |
| 20x30 | about 50 to 60 | about 75 to 100 |
| 20x40 | about 65 to 80 | about 100 to 130 |
For 60 seated with a buffet, skip the 20x30 and go 20x40: the food line needs its own space. Our party tent rental page compares frame and pole tents and when sidewalls are worth adding.
Tent permits and tent rental cost in Schenectady, NY
Tents over a certain size may need a permit or inspection. Inside city limits, check with the City of Schenectady's building or fire department. In Glenville, Rotterdam or Niskayuna, check with the town. If the tent will be staked, have underground lines marked first by calling 811, and ask the tent company whether they handle that call.
The price of a tent rental in Schenectady comes down to a handful of things:
- Tent size and type (frame or pole)
- Sidewalls, lighting and heat
- How many tables and chairs you add
- Delivery distance and setup on grass or pavement
- Your date and how long you keep the tent
