What size dance floor for 100 guests?
For 100 guests, a 12x12 to 15x15 dance floor is about right. At any moment roughly a third to half of your guests will be dancing, and each dancer needs about 3 to 4.5 square feet. That puts 100 guests at roughly 100 to 225 square feet.
| Guests | Dancing at once | Floor area | Common size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | about 17 to 25 | about 50 to 110 sq ft | 9x9 to 12x12 |
| 100 | about 33 to 50 | about 100 to 225 sq ft | 12x12 to 15x15 |
| 150 | about 50 to 75 | about 150 to 340 sq ft | 15x15 to 18x18 |
| 200 | about 67 to 100 | about 200 to 450 sq ft | 18x18 to 21x21 |
Size up for a band, a young crowd or a family that dances at every wedding. Size down for an older guest list or a party where dancing is a side event. If you're torn between two sizes, pick the smaller one: a packed floor looks like a party, and a half-empty one looks like nobody showed up.

Dance floor rental under a tent: sizing the tent around it
The floor comes out of the tent's square footage, and so does the space around it. Add the floor's area to your seating area, then leave room on the edges for people watching and for the DJ table or band. A 15x15 floor plus a band can take 400 square feet or more, the size of an entire 20x20 tent.
In a pole tent, the center poles have to stay off the dance floor, so the floor goes between poles or at one end. Frame tents have no center poles, which makes the floor easy to place anywhere. The wedding tent rental and party tent rental pages cover tent sizes, and the tent size calculator helps you size the whole layout.
Where the floor sits matters as much as its size. Put it at the center or one end of the tent with the band or DJ along its far edge, and keep the speakers pointed away from the tables closest to them. Seat the guests most likely to dance at the tables closest to the floor. Keep the bar and the buffet off the floor's edges: a line of guests waiting for drinks blocks the dancing, and spilled drinks make the panels slick.
Dance floor styles: wood parquet, white and black
Rental dance floors are built from interlocking panels, usually 3 or 4 feet square, with beveled edge trim so nobody catches a toe stepping on. Wood-look parquet is the standard surface and works with everything from a barn wedding to a graduation party. Ask about white, black or checkerboard floors if you want something that shows up in photos; they're less common and worth requesting early.
Can you put a dance floor on grass?
Yes, and most backyard dance floors sit right on the lawn. What matters is level ground. On a slope the panels can gap or rock, so tell us if the yard isn't flat and ask whether the floor can be leveled or set on a subfloor. Pick the flattest spot under the tent for the floor before you plan the tables.
Grass that's soaked from a week of rain makes setup harder and the floor softer underfoot. A tent over the floor keeps the surface dry once the evening dew sets in, which is a big reason dance floors usually go under one.
