Late June is the busiest stretch of the year for tents in Delmar. Graduation parties for Bethlehem Central seniors land on the same few weekends as every other Capital Region high school, and families often host back to back on the same street. If your date is set, book in early spring.
A graduation open house doesn't need a seat for every guest. People come and go over three or four hours, so seat about half to two-thirds of the invite list and give the rest of the tent to the food table and the crowd around it. Delmar's established neighborhoods, near Delaware Avenue and the Four Corners, have mature trees and modest back yards, where a 20x20 or 20x30 is the usual fit. Check overhanging branches before you settle on a size. Newer subdivisions in Slingerlands and Glenmont tend to have wider, more open back lawns that take a 20x40 or a 30x40 without much planning.
Measure the flat part of the yard only, then leave a couple of feet around the edge for stakes. If the lawn is tight but the driveway is long and level, a frame tent can go on the pavement with weights instead of stakes. Mention it on your request so the setup is planned for it.
Tables, chairs and sidewalls for a Delmar party
Order the tent, tables and chairs together so the layout gets planned as one piece. A 60-inch round seats 8, a 72-inch round seats 10, and a 6-foot banquet table seats 6 to 8 or carries a buffet. Sidewalls are worth adding for an evening party or a September date, when the air cools fast after sunset, and they help when a summer storm blows rain in sideways. String lights across the ceiling keep the party going once it gets dark. If the tent sits far from the house, plan how the lights get power.
Bethlehem tent permits and utility markouts
Delmar, Slingerlands, Glenmont, Elsmere and Selkirk are all hamlets of the Town of Bethlehem, so tent questions go to the town, not to the City of Albany across the Normanskill. Tents over a certain size may need a permit or a fire inspection. Call the town's building department with the tent size and whether you'll use sidewalls or heaters.
Staked tents also need a utility markout. Make sure someone calls 811 before the tent goes up, and flag sprinkler heads and buried dog fences yourself.
